Gimme more Gamay!
What makes us so excited about Beaujolais? From just one grape variety, gamay, Beaujolais produces some of Europe’s best terroir-driven wines. There are 10 crus, which are the ten villages that produce the finest wines of the region. Typically, in this small sub-appellation of Burgundy you will find juicy and easy drinking red wines whereas this pack highlights complex, age worthy red wines that will challenge any preconceived notions that you may have about Beaujolais. As a bonus, 2022 is being touted as an outstanding vintage for Beaujolais. Expect wines of intensity and tremendous character from two different sustainable and organic Beaujolais winemakers.
Philippe Viet 2022 Fleurie, Poncie, Beaujolais France $59.95
Philippe spent many years working in IT in Paris and his story is not the classic winemaker tale we’re so often telling. As he puts it, “my upbringing, education, my roots, none of it predestined me to the life of a winemaker”, but happily, here we are.Viet describes his winemaking style as “natural, but not a fundamentalist”. This Fluerie is teeming with notes of red cherry fruit and baking spices. In classic Fleurie style, this wine boosts a perfumed nose that you might not be able to get enough of. Drink now or hold for up to a decade.
Philippe Viet 2022 Regnie, Le Haute Ronze Beaujolais France -$46.95
This smooth and silky offering from the Le Haute parcel in Regnie begs to be enjoyed with a John Coltrane record late in the night. In the glass it is a pale ruby colour, let it settle for a moment to open the nose up. You’ll find notes of red fruits from raspberries, cherries and strawberries with hints of star anise and cloves.
Philippe Viet 2022 Juliénas, Les Chanoriers Beaujolais France- $45.85
The cru Juliénas gets its name from Roman Empire Julien. Which is fitting because this wine is made for royalty. A deeper ruby in the glass compared to the other offerings from Philippe Viet. The bold nose shows off red and purple floral notes followed by red berries and spice. Enjoy this wine now or hold for up to a decade. If you plan on opening up this wine soon, don’t be afraid to pair it with a richer meat dish. It might just be the perfect wine to keep you warm during a deep freeze!
Daniel Bouland 2022 Morgon, Corcelette Beaujolais France- $43.95
Daniel Bouland was launched from relative obscurity to one of Beaujolais’ darlings after rousing the wine world with his 2008 release. Year after year he thrills us with his thought-provoking wines. Fruit from Corcelette used for this bottling comes from a choice, south-facing, high-elevation site in the cru of Morgon. This wine is dense, dark and silky while still being approachable in youth. This is an excellent Gamay to share with friends who typically gravitate towards fuller bodied reds and are feeling adventurous.
Daniel Bouland 2022 Morgon, Bellevue Beaujolais France- $43.95
Out of the wines that we have selected from Daniel Bouland, this is the best one to enjoy this year especially if you like a fresh and juicy style of gamay. Hailing from younger vines in Morgan compared to the Corcelette bottling. This wine is brimming with notes of cherries, plums, peonies and a hint of smoky minerality. The body is supple while remaining approachable.
Daniel Bouland 2022 Côte de Brouilly, Cuvée Mélanie Beaujolais France- $43.95
We were so excited to have this offering for Bouland back on our shelves after a short hiatus. This powerful, delicious wine is one that you will want to hold on to. If you aren’t feeling that patient, no problem after some decanting this wine will show beautifully. Aromas of raspberries, plums, spices and smoky mineral notes give way on the nose. Its fruity composition is balanced with tangy acidity and firm tannins. Enjoy this wine with prime rib or a special roast ham.
