WE LOVE IT BECAUSE:

2021 was one of the warmest growing seasons on record. Bud break occurred in early April, ahead of historical averages. In late June, a “heat dome” descended upon the west coast, shattering previous temperature records. Our detailed focus on vine nutrition allowed us to cultivate incredibly healthy vines that could withstand these high temperature swings. The heat proved to be beneficial, as it enabled ideal cluster and berry size, with the ability to stress the vines and control all aspects of growth. Veraison began in mid-July, in-line with recent years but early by historical standards. Temperatures cooled back down in September and October, allowing for extended hang time and optimal ripeness. Historically low yields, high Brix and good acidity, especially given the warmth of the year, were hallmarks of this vintage. -Paul Golitzin, Director of Winemaking

Wine and winemaking run deep in the veins of both Alex and Jeannette Golitzin, founders of Quilceda Creek. Of Russian and French descent respectively, both were introduced to wine at relatively young ages, developing passions born of ancestry, family gatherings and community. Their decision to start a winery in 1978 when the Washington State wine industry was still in its youth is testament to their determination and pioneering spirit. Their unswerving dedication to quality set the standard to which Quilceda Creek adheres to this day.

Today Quilceda Creek has won more accolades for its Cabernet Sauvignons than Alex and Jeannette can count, and they enjoy being close to Paul, the team, and the winery’s state-of-the-art production facilities built in 2003 and 2010. In thinking of their humble origins, the couple say they pinch themselves when they see where Quilceda Creek is today. As the founders of this benchmark producer, they are pleased and proud to have earned their place among the founders of the Washington State wine industry.

The Columbia Valley is home to over 99% of all of Washington’s vinifera acreage. Cabernet Sauvignon is the most planted grape followed by Merlot, Chardonnay, Riesling, and Syrah. However, over 30 vinifera varieties are currently planted in this region.

Pure fruit aromas and flavors are the hallmarks of wine from the Columbia Valley. For Cabernet Sauvignon, black cherry, cassis, and light, high-toned herbal notes are often the hallmarks. Merlots are redolent with red fruit aromas and flavors, such as sweet cherries, red currants, and raspberries, along with chocolate and, occasionally, mint.

Chardonnays are mildly aromatic with aromas and flavors ranging from fresh green apple to stone fruit and tropical fruit depending on the warmth of the site. In terms of Riesling, cooler sites tend to produce aromas and flavors of lime, lemon, and green apple. In warmer regions this turns to stone fruit, particularly peach.
