WE LOVE IT BECAUSE:

This wine from Dominio do Bebei is made with mainly Mencia, a grape variety native to the western part of the Iberian peninsula. In the glass you’ll find layers of dark fruits, fennel, smoke and spice wrapped in fine tannins and earth. Grown on steeply terraced vineyards in the rugged valleys of Ribiero Sacra, the vines are anywhere from 26 to 100 years old. The wine is aged in both new and neutral oak barrels for 15 months which adds spicy complexity to compliment the fruitiness and enhances aging potential.

Established in 2001 by Javier Dominguez as part of an endeavor to reconnect with familial roots in Ribeira Sacra. The winery is located in and named for the breathtaking Bibei Valley. The vineyards are scattered throughout the steep hills at elevations anywhere from 350 to 950m above sea level. Reverence for the land is centric to Dominio do Bibei. The vineyards are cultivated using biodynamic methods and the winery itself has been built below ground so as to not interfere with the natural scenery of the region.

The sweeping valleys of Ribeira Sacra, which translates to “Sacred Riverbank” sit in the heart of Galicia. The continental-mediterranean climate and mountainous terrain composed of granite, schist and slate make for optimal wine growing conditions. Because of the dramatic nature of the landscape, with some vineyards planted on nearly vertical slopes, mechanical harvesting is nearly impossible. Exciting and high quality wines have been produced in Ribeira Sacra since Roman times.
