Some of the world’s most revered wines are made at this charming winery in northern France, near the German border. With vines first planted in the ninth century, a winery was established as a Capuchin monastery in 1612. That enclosed vineyard plot of 5 hectares is still known as Clos de Capuchins and forms the heart of today’s estate, which now extends across 28 hectares, all organically and biodynamically farmed, a brook babbling throughout (hence the name). Its prestigious vineyards include various Grand Cru sites, including the upper part of the famed Schlossberg hill. The region has a unique heritage, having changed hands between the German and the French, many times. The influence of both cultures shows in the bottle. At the base of the Vosges Mountains the regions grapes are slow to ripen providing complexity to the wines.
