WE LOVE IT BECAUSE:

At the foot of the majestic Schlossberg hill in Alsace stands one of the finest estates in all of France. Weinbach produces richly concentrated, fragrant dry Rieslings, for which the Grand Cru Schlossberg vineyard is particularly well-situated. Ranging from the delicate Reserve Personelle, to the intense, dry Cuvee Theo, the elegant, very dry, very fine Schlossberg, the rich and fruity Cuvee Ste. Catherine, to the majestic and full-bodied Grand Cru Schlossberg Cuvee Ste. Catherine, each Riesling is distinctive. The rich, rose-scented, spicy Gewurztraminers from Domaine Weinbach are among the finest in the world. Ranging in style from the slightly sweet, rich and powerful Altenbourg Cuvee Laurence, to the stunning, full-bodied, off-dry Grand Cru Furstentum Cuvee Laurence, these are rich yet elegant wines with great aromatic complexity.

Some of the world’s most revered wines are made at this charming winery in northern France, near the German border. With vines first planted in the ninth century, a winery was established as a Capuchin monastery in 1612. That enclosed vineyard plot of 5 hectares is still known as Clos de Capuchins and forms the heart of today’s estate, which now extends across 28 hectares, all organically and biodynamically farmed, a brook babbling throughout (hence the name). Its prestigious vineyards include various Grand Cru sites, including the upper part of the famed Schlossberg hill. Make a booking and you’ll be made to feel like one of the family, tastings hosted along a communal wooden dining table.

The region has a unique heritage, having changed hands between the German and the French, many times. The influence of both cultures shows in the bottle. At the base of the Vosges Mountains the regions grapes are slow to ripen providing complexity to the wines.
