Vuelo de Vino
Spanish wines are dynamic and versatile! Sometimes they can be lumped together in the styles of the better known Spanish regions like Rioja but as you know, we love finding quality wines from all over! This pack consists of 6 wines from different areas of Spain, that you might not have heard of before. We like to look at it like a wine flight, which is what “Vuelo de Vino” means. The best part is that all of these wines are under $30. Spain is known for offering incredible value. You might even find your new favourite go-to wine in this pack!
Casa Natal 2021 Albarino, Rias Baixas, Spain – $26.95
Rias Baixas (ri-as bai-sas) is in an area referred to as “Green Spain” in the North next to the Portuguese border. This area is green and lush, Albarino is the queen of this region. If you love Sauvignon Blanc and want to branch out, this is the wine for you. Notes of citrus like lemon, grapefruit stand out on the nose right away. Followed by peaches and apricots on the palate. Enjoy with a ceviche or goat cheese!
Melea 2021 Single Estate White, Terra Alta, Spain- $24.95
The entry level Melea wines have been a staple on our shelves for the past couple years. This small family run winery in Terra Alta also makes single estate wines and this is our very first time having them in store. Terra Alta is a very mountainous area where vines grow on slopes among almond trees and olive groves. This white is made of mostly organic Garnacha Blanca grapes and some Viognier for aromatics. This fruity wine has tropical notes of pineapple, banana and lemon. Enjoy with fish tacos!
Melea NV Tempranillo Rosado, Spain $18.95
Melea is named for a rare bee species, and is partnered with 1% For the Planet an organization that supports environmental nonprofits, with a special emphasis on bees. Oh, and did we mention it’s organic and vegan – truly the bees knees! This wine is made from 100% Tempranillo, it has a vibrant salmon hue with notes of fresh picked strawberries, red currant and watermelon. Reminiscent of fruit leathers that you ate as a kid, with a hint of juicy plum and a dry finish.
Las Carlinas 2019 Old Vines Garnacha – Campo de Borja, Spain $19.95
Garnache is a sun-loving grape that thrives in hot, dry conditions. It’s no surprise that fruit for this old vine Grenache is grown in Cariñena in northeastern Spain. True to what we love about this grape, the wine is teeming with notes of juicy raspberry and red cherry. With just a touch of oak to finish the wine, enjoy elements like cinnamon, fig and fruit leather. Enjoy with pork loin or chill down the bottle to enjoy on its own.
Melea 2021 Single Estate Red, Terra Alta, Spain- $24.95
Made up of mostly Garnacha and some Syrah. The warm Mediterranean sunshine in Terra Alta gives this wine a deep cherry red colour with some purple hues. Notes of ripe strawberries, blackberries, black pepper and a hint of smoke. This medium bodied wine can be enjoyed with pungent hard cheeses and salty cured meats.
Barahonda Fenómeno 2020 Monastrell, Yecla, Spain- $20.95
Yelca is the smallest wine region in Spain! They predominantly grow Monastrell, a grape otherwise known as Mouverdre. Fruit forward with notes of black plum, blackberries, and blueberries, all balanced with a smokey undertone. This full bodied wine has velvety tannins, it’s a perfect wine for those who love Californian Cabernet and want to try something new at an approachable price point.
