ABC – Anything But Chardonnay
Whether you are an ABC (Anything But Chardonnay) wine drinker or maybe have had too much Chardonnay this season and are looking for something different, this is the pack for you! We think there is something to be said about enjoying a textured and fuller white wine in the cold evenings but this doesn’t always have to mean Chardonnay. We have grouped together our favourite Chardonnay substitutes in the shop. You might also find your new favourite ABC wine among these!
Arnaud Lambert 2022 Les Parcelles – Loire Valley, France $34.85
Arnaud Lambert is one of the staff’s favourite producers. This independent winemaker’s vineyards are located in the south Saumur, in Saint-Cyr-en-Bourg. This chardonnay alternative is vinified in neutral oak barrels to coax out the gorgeous, subtle texture. You’ll find notes of pears, pineapple, ginger, chamomile and honey comb. This wine is perfect to enjoy with creamy mushroom risotto or a goat cheese salad.
Nicosia 2021 Lenza Di Munti Etna Bianco – Sicily, Italy $31.85
Hailing from Sicily, made from mostly Carricante and a splash of Cataratto; this wine may come off as intimidating but it is anything but that! Notes of white flowers, grapefruit, apple all delivered over a slightly creamy palate. The finish is long and mineral, which gives all of the best qualities of a chardonnay without being one. Enjoy with sushi, vegetable tempura and fish tacos.
Domaine Saint-Roch 2020 Viognier – Languedoc-Roussillon, France $21.85
A rich white from Jeff Carrel’s Domaine St Roch, this full bodied wine has a classic chardonnay-type creamy palate. Aromas of ripe papaya, banana bread, dried apricots, white pepper and white flowers made this wine distinct and unique. Enjoy with a piping hot bowl of pho during a cold snap to warm your soul.
Adria 2021 Godello – Bierzo, Spain $28.85
Pronounced “go-day-yo”, this Spanish white variety is a thirst quenching alternative to an unoaked chardonnay! It’s a great option for anyone looking for a bright, crisp wine to enjoy on its own. Bodegas Adria grows these grapes organically from 25 year old vines and it is finished with small amounts of sulfites. Pale yellow with greenish hues in the glass, this wine boasts notes of yellow apples, lemon and grapefruit. All of those fresh notes are balanced with a soft, smooth texture and a long floral finish. Seafood or mild cheeses compliments this chablis-type wine well.
Domaine Lafond 2019 Lirac Blanc – Lirac, Rhone Valley, France $29.85
This winter white is a round but fresh blend of Grenache Blanc 50%, Roussanne 30%, and Viognier 20% . Notes of apple, lime zest, peach and acacia flowers make this wine an approachable non-chardonnay dinner option. Due to a few short hours of maceration with the skins and the addition of Viognier, this wine has enough body to be paired with poultry dishes but it is still fresh enough to be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif.
Amalia NV White – Aragon, Spain $16.85
Founded in 1945 in Zaragoza, Amalia is one of the longest standing small wineries in the area, combining traditional winemaking expertise with the latest technology. This 100% Macabeo boasts intense aromas of green apple and pineapple along with subtle floral notes. Dry, fresh and light-bodied with good balanced and well integrated acidity, this white pairs well with Southeast Asian cuisine such as coconut curries and vermicelli bowls.
